Compress GIF
Make animated GIFs smaller for Discord, Slack, email and websites.
Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.
Compress GIF in short
Add one or more GIFs, then pick Light, Medium or Strong. Medium suits most chat apps, then compress, check each file's new size and the preview, and download the GIFs or a ZIP. It's free, there's no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
How to use Compress GIF
- 1Add one or more GIFs.
- 2Pick Light, Medium or Strong. Medium suits most chat apps.
- 3Compress, check each file's new size and the preview, and download the GIFs or a ZIP.
Good to know
- Light keeps the size and frame rate and only cuts the colour palette to 128. Medium also caps the GIF at 480 pixels wide and 15 frames a second; Strong at 320 pixels, 10 frames a second and 32 colours. GIFs already smaller than a cap are left at their size.
- The palette is built from your GIF's own frames, and only the pixels that change between frames are stored, which is where most of the saving comes from.
- If a level makes a GIF bigger, which happens with GIFs that were already optimised, you get the original back and the results table says so.
- The converter is a copy of FFmpeg that runs in your browser. It's about 31 MB, so it downloads the first time you use it.
- This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.
Compress GIF: common questions
- Is Compress GIF free?
- Yes. Compress GIF is free, works without an account and adds no watermark, for files up to 500 MB. Pro raises that to 2 GB.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. Compress GIF runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
- Does Compress GIF work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
- Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
