Help and troubleshooting

We check the file's contents, not its name. If it says the file isn't a PDF, it may be a different format renamed to .pdf. If it says the file may be damaged, try opening it in a PDF viewer and saving a fresh copy, then use that copy.

Use Unlock PDF with the file's password first, then run the tool on the unlocked copy. We don't guess or crack passwords, so a file whose password you don't have can't be processed.

Compression mostly works by re-encoding photos and scans. A PDF that is mainly text is usually already compact, so there may be little to gain. Try the Strong level if quality matters less. If nothing beats the original, we tell you and it doesn't count toward your allowance.

Page numbers mean physical positions in the file: page 1 is the first page, whatever number is printed on it. So in a book whose first page is numbered “iii”, that page is still page 1 here.

In-browser tools use your device's memory. Very large or image-heavy files can be too much for phones and older laptops. Try splitting the file first, closing other tabs, or using a desktop browser.

Downloads go to your browser's usual downloads folder. Results from server tools stay available for about 60 minutes; after that they are deleted and you'll need to run the tool again.

No. Cropping changes what viewers display; the hidden area is still in the file. Don't rely on cropping to remove sensitive information. Use Redact PDF to remove it for good.

Sign PDF places an image of your signature. It is not a certificate-based digital signature and doesn't prove identity or detect changes. Whether an image signature is acceptable depends on who you're sending it to; check with them if unsure.
