Resize video

Change a video's resolution or shape, for example to 720p or 9:16 for Stories.

Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Resize a video or change its resolution

Resize Video changes a video's dimensions. Make a 4K or 1080p clip 720p so it's smaller to send, or change its shape to vertical 9:16, square or portrait 4:5 for social media. Choose how it fits: black bars so nothing is cut off, fill to crop the edges, or stretch.

Making a video smaller in pixels is the simplest way to make the file smaller, which helps when an email, a chat app or a website has an upload limit.

Resize video in short

Choose a video, then pick a size such as 1080p, 720p, square or vertical, or type your own, then choose how it fits (bars, fill or stretch), select Resize and download. It's free, there's no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to use Resize video

Good to know

  • Fit adds black bars so nothing is cut off. Fill crops the edges to fill the frame. Stretch changes the shape.
  • Making a video smaller in pixels is also the simplest way to make the file smaller.
  • The first time you use an audio or video tool, your browser downloads our 31 MB processing engine. It's kept for next time, so later runs start straight away.
  • Processing happens on your device, so speed depends on your computer. A minute of 1080p video takes roughly one to three minutes on a recent laptop; phones are slower.
  • This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.

Common sizes

  • Smaller files

720p is a good balance of sharpness and size for email and messaging.

  • Stories and Reels

1080 × 1920 vertical, with bars or filled.

  • Feed posts

    1080 × 1080 square or 1080 × 1350 portrait.

  • Matching clips

Bring clips to the same size before editing them together.

Why use ConvertFile

Resize video: common questions

How do I reduce a video's file size?
Resize it to 720p or 480p. Fewer pixels means a smaller file. The Video converter can also lower the resolution while changing format.
How do I make a horizontal video vertical without cutting it?
Pick Vertical 9:16 and Fit. The whole picture is kept with bars above and below. Choose Fill to crop the sides instead.
Can I make a video bigger?
Yes, but upscaling doesn't add detail. A 480p video resized to 1080p looks the same, just larger.
Is Resize video free?
Yes. Resize video is free, works without an account and adds no watermark, for files up to 500 MB. Pro raises that to 2 GB.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Resize video runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
Does Resize video work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
