PDF to Word

Turn a PDF's text into an editable Word document, with headings, paragraphs and lists.

Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

PDF to Word in short

Add a PDF, then pick the pages to convert, then download the .docx and edit it in Word, Google Docs or Pages. It's free, there's no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to use PDF to Word

  1. 1Add a PDF.
  2. 2Pick the pages to convert.
  3. 3Download the .docx and edit it in Word, Google Docs or Pages.

Good to know

  • You get the text, not a copy of the page. Headings, paragraphs and lists become real Word headings, paragraphs and lists, but the PDF's layout, fonts, images and tables aren't recreated.
  • Headings are worked out from text size and use Word's built-in Heading styles, so they show in the navigation pane.
  • Running headers, footers and page numbers that repeat on most pages are left out.
  • Tables come out as plain lines of text, and multi-column pages may read across columns.
  • Scanned pages have no text. Run OCR PDF on them first.
  • Page numbers mean physical positions in the file: page 1 is the first page, whatever number is printed on it.
  • This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.

PDF to Word: common questions

Is PDF to Word free?
Yes. PDF to Word is free and works without an account, for files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. A free account raises that to 50 MB and 400 pages.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. PDF to Word runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
Will the Word file look exactly like my PDF?
No, and we say so up front. You get the text with its structure: headings, paragraphs and lists, ready to edit. The original layout, fonts, images and tables aren't recreated. If you need a pixel-perfect copy, keep the PDF and edit only the text you need.
Why is my Word file empty?
The PDF is probably a scan, which is a picture of text rather than text. Run OCR PDF on it first, then convert the searchable copy.
Does PDF to Word work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
