Split PDF

Break a PDF into several files by page range or into single pages.

Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Split PDF in short

Add a PDF, type the page ranges you want as separate files (for example 1-3, 4-8, 9-12) or choose a fixed number of pages per file, then select Split. Each range becomes its own PDF, and several files download together as a ZIP. Splitting runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How to use Split PDF

  1. 1Add a PDF.
  2. 2Choose ranges such as 1-3, 4-8, or split every page into its own file.
  3. 3Download one ZIP containing the new files.

Good to know

  • Each output file is a full copy of the selected pages, including their annotations.
  • Page numbers mean physical positions in the file: page 1 is the first page, whatever number is printed on it.
  • This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.

Splitting a 12-page report

We split a 12-page, 26.0 KB file called report.pdf with the ranges 1-3, 4-8, 9-12. The three files came back in split-pages.zip:

Splitting a 12-page report
FilePagesSize
report-pages-1-3.pdf1 to 37.0 KB
report-pages-4-8.pdf4 to 811.2 KB
report-pages-9-12.pdf9 to 129.1 KB

The parts add up to slightly more than the original because each one is a complete PDF with its own structure. A single-page part is named like report-page-5.pdf. Measured on 10 October 2026 with the same code that runs on this page, using sample documents we generated ourselves.

Limits

  • Without an account: files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. With a free account: 50 MB and 400 pages.
  • Page numbers are positions in the file, starting at 1, not the numbers printed on the pages.
  • Ranges can't run backwards (write 4-8, not 8-4) or go past the last page. 8- means page 8 to the end.

What happens to your file

Split PDF runs in this browser tab. Your PDF is read and rewritten on your own device and handed back as a download; it is never sent to ConvertFile. We record only that the tool was used (its name and whether it finished), never file names, sizes or contents. Closing the tab discards everything.

If something goes wrong

It says a range goes past the end
Page numbers count from the first page of the file. A document with a cover and contents pages may print page 1 on its third page; type 3, not 1.
Bookmarks or form fields are missing in the parts
Each part is a new PDF that contains the pages only. Bookmarks, the document title and fillable fields are not copied. Links between pages in the same part keep working; links to pages in another part are removed.
I want one file per page
Choose Fixed size and set pages per file to 1.

Guides

  • How to reduce PDF file size

Make a PDF smaller for email or an upload form: compress the images, cut pages you don't need, or split it. Tested figures, the attachment limits of Gmail and Outlook, and what not to bother with.

  • Why a compressed PDF is still too large

Compression only shrinks images, and only some of them. Tested results on scans, photos, screenshots and text show why a PDF stays big, and what to do when it's still over the limit.

Split PDF: common questions

Is Split PDF free?
Yes. Split PDF is free and works without an account, for files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. A free account raises that to 50 MB and 400 pages.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Split PDF runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
Can I split every page into its own PDF?
Yes. Choose Fixed size and set pages per file to 1, and you get one ZIP containing a separate PDF for each page. You can also type ranges such as 1-3, 4-8 to get one file per range.
Does Split PDF work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
