Crop video

Cut away the edges of a video, or crop it square or vertical for social media.

Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Crop a video to square, vertical or any shape

Crop Video cuts away the parts of the frame you don't want. Use it to reframe a landscape clip as a 9:16 vertical video for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, make it square for a feed, or cut off black bars, a messy edge or a person at the side.

Pick a ready-made shape and slide it into place, or draw your own box. The cropped video keeps the original pixels, so it's sharper than zooming and nothing is stretched.

Crop video in short

Choose a video, then pick a shape such as square, 9:16 or 16:9, or draw your own box, and move it into place, then select Crop and download the MP4. It's free, there's no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to use Crop video

    Choose a video

Open the clip. The preview shows the full frame.

Good to know

  • Cropping keeps the original pixels, so the output is smaller in size, not stretched.
  • The first time you use an audio or video tool, your browser downloads our 31 MB processing engine. It's kept for next time, so later runs start straight away.
  • Processing happens on your device, so speed depends on your computer. A minute of 1080p video takes roughly one to three minutes on a recent laptop; phones are slower.
  • This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.

Popular crops

  • 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts

Turn a landscape video vertical by keeping the middle.

  • 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds

Square and portrait shapes fill more of the screen in Instagram and Facebook feeds.

  • Remove black bars

Crop out letterboxing from a video that was padded to fit.

  • Reframe

Cut out a distracting edge, or focus on one person.

Crop video: common questions

How do I crop a video for Instagram or TikTok?
Choose Vertical 9:16 for Reels, Stories and TikTok, or Square 1:1 or Portrait 4:5 for the feed. Slide the box over the subject and select Crop.
What's the difference between crop and resize?
Crop cuts away part of the picture. Resize keeps the whole picture and changes its dimensions, adding bars or stretching to fit a new shape.
Does cropping reduce quality?
The pixels you keep stay as they are, but the video is re-encoded once, which is standard for any change to the picture.
Can I crop and trim at the same time?
Yes, in the Video editor, which combines trim, crop, rotate and more in one pass.
Is Crop video free?
Yes. Crop video is free, works without an account and adds no watermark, for files up to 500 MB. Pro raises that to 2 GB.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Crop video runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
Does Crop video work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
