Unlock PDF

Remove a password you already know.

Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Unlock PDF in short

Add the protected PDF, type its password and download a copy that opens without one. The tool needs the correct password: it doesn't guess or crack passwords, and it won't open a file you can't already open. The unlocked copy has the same pages and text as the original. Only remove protection from files you're allowed to change.

How to use Unlock PDF

  1. 1Add a protected PDF.
  2. 2Enter its password.
  3. 3Download a copy that opens without one.

Good to know

  • You need the correct password. This tool does not guess or crack passwords.
  • Only remove protection from files you are authorised to change.
  • This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.

Unlocking a protected 3-page document

We protected a 3-page PDF with AES-256, then tried to unlock it with the wrong password and the right one.

Limits

  • Without an account: files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. With a free account: 50 MB and 400 pages.
  • You need the password that opens the file. There is no password recovery.
  • Unlocking rewrites the file, so a certificate-based digital signature will show as invalid.

What happens to your file

Unlock PDF runs in this browser tab. The PDF and its password stay on your device, and the unlocked copy is created here and handed back as a download. We record only that the tool was used, never the file, its name or the password.

If something goes wrong

It says the password is wrong
PDF passwords are case-sensitive, and a password copied from an email often picks up a space at the end. Type it in by hand. Bank and payslip PDFs often use a date of birth or part of an account number; check the email the file came with.
I don't know the password
Ask whoever sent the file. We don't offer password cracking, and a strong password can't be guessed in any reasonable time.
Other tools say my PDF is password-protected
Unlock it here first, then use the unlocked copy in Merge, Compress or any other tool.

Unlock PDF: common questions

Is Unlock PDF free?
Yes. Unlock PDF is free and works without an account, for files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. A free account raises that to 50 MB and 400 pages.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Unlock PDF runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
Can you remove a PDF password I don't know?
No. You need the correct password. This tool does not guess or crack passwords; it saves an unprotected copy of a file you can already open.
Does Unlock PDF work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
