Good to know

  • Most damage is in the file's index (the cross-reference table), which can be rebuilt without changing any content.
  • Badly damaged or cut-off files are rebuilt page by page. Pages that can't be read are left out, and we tell you how many were recovered.
  • If your file has no structural problems, we say so and don't charge for the job.
  • Repair can't bring back content that is missing from the file, such as the end of a download that stopped early.
  • Password-protected files need Unlock PDF first.

Repair PDF: common questions

Is Repair PDF free?
Yes. Repair PDF is free and works without an account, for files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. A free account raises that to 50 MB and 400 pages.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
Yes. Repair PDF needs server software, so the file is uploaded over HTTPS, stored privately and deleted automatically about 60 minutes after processing, or straight away if you ask.
Can every damaged PDF be repaired?
No. Repair rebuilds a broken file structure and recovers the pages that can still be read. It can't restore content that isn't in the file, such as the missing end of a download that stopped early. We tell you how many pages were recovered.
Do I pay for a repair if nothing was wrong?
No. If the file has no structural problems we say so, give you nothing to download, and the job doesn't count toward your allowance.
Does Repair PDF work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
