Add text to video

Add a title, caption or label on top of a video.

Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Add text, titles and captions to a video

Add Text to Video writes a title, caption, label or call to action on top of your video. Type the text, pick the position, size and colour, add a dark box behind it for readability, and choose whether it shows for the whole clip or just part of it.

The text is drawn with your device's own fonts, so any language your device can display works, including accents, right-to-left scripts and emoji. The video is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Add text to video in short

Choose a video, then type the text and pick its position, size, colour and background, then select Add text and download the MP4. It's free, there's no sign-up, and it runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

How to use Add text to video

  1. 1

    Choose a video

Open the clip you want to add words to.

  2. 2

    Type your text

Press Enter for a new line. Keep captions short so they're readable on a phone.

  3. 3

    Style and place it

Choose one of seven positions, a size from 2% to 15% of the video's width, any colour, bold, and an optional dark background box.

  4. 4

    Set the timing and save

Show it all the way through, or only between two times. Select Add text and download.

Good to know

  • Text is drawn with your device's fonts, so any language your device can show works, including emoji.
  • Set a start and end time to show the text for part of the video only.
  • The first time you use an audio or video tool, your browser downloads our 31 MB processing engine. It's kept for next time, so later runs start straight away.
  • Processing happens on your device, so speed depends on your computer. A minute of 1080p video takes roughly one to three minutes on a recent laptop; phones are slower.
  • This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.

Ways to use text

  • Titles

Open a video with its name, a date or a location.

  • Captions for silent viewing

Most social video is watched with the sound off. A line of text says what's happening.

  • Calls to action

End with a website, a handle or 'Link in bio'.

  • Labels

Name the speaker in an interview, or label steps in a tutorial.

Add text to video: common questions

How do I put text on a video for free?
Choose the video, type your text, pick where it goes and how it looks, and select Add text. There's no watermark or sign-up.
Can I add subtitles from an SRT file?
Not yet. This tool adds one block of text, for the whole video or part of it. For several captions, run it once per caption on the result.
Will the text show on every player?
Yes. It's drawn into the picture itself, not a separate subtitle track, so it shows everywhere, including Instagram and WhatsApp.
Can I use my own font?
The text uses your device's system font in regular or bold. Custom font upload isn't available yet.
Is Add text to video free?
Yes. Add text to video is free, works without an account and adds no watermark, for files up to 500 MB. Pro raises that to 2 GB.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Add text to video runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
Does Add text to video work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
