Add page numbers
Stamp page numbers in the position and style you choose.
Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.
Add page numbers in short
Add a PDF, choose where the number goes (top or bottom, left, centre or right), a format such as 1, Page 1 or Page 1 of 10, the first number, text size, distance from the edge and colour. Click a page to leave it unnumbered, for example a cover. Download the result. Numbers are added as real text in Helvetica, so they can be selected and searched, and they sit the right way up on rotated pages.
How to use Add page numbers
- 1Add a PDF.
- 2Pick a position, starting number, format and the pages to number.
- 3Download the numbered file.
Good to know
- Page numbers mean physical positions in the file: page 1 is the first page, whatever number is printed on it.
- This tool runs in your browser. Very large files depend on your device's memory.
Numbering a 12-page report without its cover
We numbered pages 2 to 12 of a sample 12-page report as "Page 1 of 11", bottom centre, 10 pt, 10 mm from the edge, then read the text back out of the file.
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Cover page | No number | No number |
| Page 2 | No number | Page 1 of 11 |
| Page 12 | No number | Page 11 of 11 |
| Number is selectable text | Yes | |
| File size | 26.0 KB | 28.9 KB |
The "of 11" total counts only the pages you number, and the first number can be any value, so a second volume can start at 101. Measured on 1 November 2026 by running this page's code on sample documents we generated ourselves.
Limits
- Without an account: files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. With a free account: 50 MB and 400 pages.
- Numbers use one font (Helvetica) and digits only: there are no Roman numerals or letters.
- The number is drawn on top of the page. If the page already has something printed in that corner, increase the distance from the edge or pick another position.
- Page numbers mean physical positions in the file: page 1 is the first page, whatever number is printed on it.
What happens to your file
Add page numbers runs in this browser tab. Your PDF is read and rewritten on your own device and handed back as a download; it is never sent to ConvertFile. We record only that the tool was used (its name and whether it finished), never file names, sizes or contents. Closing the tab discards everything.
If something goes wrong
- The number overlaps the footer
- Raise the distance from the edge (the default is 10 mm) or move the number to the top of the page.
- I need numbering to restart in each section
- Split the PDF into sections with Split PDF, number each part with the starting number you want, then merge the parts back together.
- The numbers are in the wrong place on landscape pages
- Positions are worked out per page from the page as it's displayed, so landscape and rotated pages get the number on their own bottom edge. If a page looks wrong, it may be a portrait page with sideways content; rotate it first with Rotate PDF.

Add page numbers: common questions
- Is Add page numbers free?
- Yes. Add page numbers is free and works without an account, for files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. A free account raises that to 50 MB and 400 pages.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No. Add page numbers runs in your web browser, so the file is read on your own device and never sent to ConvertFile.
- Can I start page numbering from a number other than 1?
- Yes. Set the first number, pick which pages to number, and choose the position and format, for example "Page 3 of 10".
- Does Add page numbers work on Mac, Windows, Android and iPhone?
- Yes. It runs in any modern web browser, with nothing to install. Very large files work best on a desktop or laptop, because in-browser tools use your device's memory.
